Ya hace tiempo que en mi iPod tengo una lista de reproducción llamada Bway. En ella acumulo los diferentes cast recordings de los musicales que me voy tropezando y que no puedo dejar de escuchar. No obstante, últimamente en esa lista van creciendo el número de canciones cantadas por actores de Broadway pero que no pertenecen a ningún musical, canciones como las de los discos de Scott Alan, Pasek & Paul o Joe Iconis. Todas ellas canciones que puedo oír una y otra vez sin que dejen de emocionarme, por eso, hemos querido saber un poquito más de esos autores.
Empezaremos con Scott Alan, una de nuestras mayores obsesiones. No sé vosotros, pero yo ya hace tiempo perdí la cuenta de cuántas veces había escuchado Again, cantada por Hadley Fraser. Os dejo lo que nos ha contado.
BiS: Creciste siendo un fan de broadway? Cuál fue el primer
musical de broadway que viste?
SA: He sido un fan de
broadway desde que tengo uso de razón. Solía disfrazarme como Annie de niño. El
primer espectáculo que vi fue la producción Off-Broadway de la “Pequeña Tienda
de los Horrores”. El primer espectáculo de Broadway que vi fue Into The Woods.
BiS: Cómo descubriste que escribir canciones era a lo que querías
dedicar tu vida? Si no pudieras trabajar en el negocio de la música, ¿qué te
gustaría hacer?
SA: Siempre pensé que sería
un intérprete en la industria teatral. Cuando empecé a escribir supe
inmediatamente que la forma en que quería continuar trabajando en la industria
era expresándome a través de mis canciones.
Si
hubiera cualquier otra cosa que me gustaría hacer sería descubrir nuevos
talentos y nuevos espectáculos, también relacionado con la industria.
BiS: También estudiaste canto en el Berkley College of Music,
cuándo decidiste que preferías escribir música?
SA: En el momento que escribí
mi primera canción, lo supe.
BiS: En tus álbumes siempre participan grandes actores/cantantes
de broadway y el West End londinense. Qué se siente cuando gente con tanto
talento canta tu música?
SA: Uno de los mejores
sentimientos del mundo es escuchar a actores con tanto talento interpretar mi trabajo.
He sido muy afortunado.
BiS: Tus canciones a menudo son cantadas tanto por hombres como
mujeres, independientemente de la letra. Fueron originalmente escritas con esa
intención?
SA: Escribo para mi, así que
cuando le doy una canción a una persona en particular para que la cante,
simplemente dejo que reaccione al material original, sin importar el género.
Todos nos emocionamos del mismo modo.
BiS: Si pudieras elegir cualquier actor/cantante del mundo para
cantar una de tus canciones, ¿quién te gustaría que fuera?
SA: Me muero por trabajar con
Tina Arena. Un día sucederá.
BiS: Sacarás un nuevo álbum este año. ¿Qué podemos esperar de él?
SA: No lo sé todavía. Cambio
la dirección del álbum a diario. Os sorprenderá tanto como a mi.
BiS: Creaste la música para el nuevo musical HOME (hogar), cuya
lectura tuvo lugar el verano pasado. ¿Cuál es su estado en este momento? Oímos
que se prepara su estreno en el West End para 2014, ¿qué nos puedes contar
sobre él?
SA: Los nuevos musicales son
difíciles porque lleva mucho trabajo levantarlo. Por ahora, sabéis tanto como
yo y os enteraréis tan pronto como siga adelante.
BiS: Estás bastante activo en twitter, fb, tumblr… qué es lo que
más te gusta de las redes sociales?
SA: En realidad no me
apasionan. Pienso que ganas una falsa sensación de nosotros mismos en las redes
sociales. Es extremadamente fácil apartarse de la realidad. Dicho eso, yo soy
mi propio negocio y para vender mi producto es tremendamente importante ser
visto y oído en estos sitios. Intento ser lo más honesto posible. Mi humor se
pierde muy a menudo en twitter porque tiendo a ser un individuo muy sarcástico.
Me gusta Tumblr porque me da la oportunidad de escribir pensamientos y
editarlos incluso después de que se haya publicado.
BiS: Con la temporada de premios cada vez más cerca, y algunos nombres
importante estrenándose en los próximos meses, ¿qué nuevo espectáculo de
Broadway tienes más ganas de ver?
SA: Tengo muchas ganas de ver
Rocky porque me encanta el trabajo de Ahrens y Flahery. También quiero ver The
Bridges Of Madison County (Los puentes de Madison). Todavía no he visto
Beautiful y me encanta la música de Carole King, así que ese también quiero verlo en un futuro. Oh! Y por
supuesto Violet. Me encanta la banda sonora de Jeanine Tesori y Brian Crawley.
Con Sutton Foster, Joshua Henry y Colin Donnell en él, va a ser un exitazo.
BiS: Ya sé que ya te lo preguntamos por Twitter pero… ¿Harás
alguna vez un concierto en España? Pooorfaaaa?? =) =)
SA: Lamentablemente, no tengo
los fondos para volar por mi mismo a ciudades para hacer conciertos de mi
trabajo. Hace falta que un productor o
gerente de un teatro me quieran en su ciudad y esa es la razón por la
que aún no he tenido la oportunidad de actuar en España. Espero con ilusión el
día en que reciba una oferta para actuar allí y más os vale venir a saludar
después del show‼
For some time now I’ve had on my
iPod a playlist called Bway. In it I put
all the different cast recordings of the musicals I come across and end up
obsessed. However, lately, in that list there’s a growing number of songs sung
by broadway actors but that don’t belong to any musical, songs like the ones by
Scott Alan, PAsek & Paul or Joe Iconis. All of them songs I can play over
and over without failing to give me goosebumps. That’s why, we’ve wanted to
learn a little more about the composers.
We’ll start with Scott Alan, one of
our biggest obsessions. I don’t know about you, but, it’s been a while since I
lost track of the number of times I’ve played Again, sung by Hadley Fraser.
Here’s what he told us.
BiS: Did you grow up being a Broadway nerd? Which is the first Broadway
musical you saw?
SA: I’ve been a Broadway nerd as
long as I can remember. I use to dress
up as Annie as a kid. The first show I
saw was the Off-Broadway production of Little Shop of Horrors. The first Broadway show I saw was Into the
Woods.
BiS: How did you find that songwriting was what you wanted to do for a
living? If you couldn’t work in the music business, what would you like to do?
SA: I always thought I would be a
performer in the theatre industry. When
I started writing I knew right away that expressing myself through my music was
how I wanted to continue working in the industry.
If there was anything else I would
love to do in the music industry it would be discovering new talent and new
shows.
BiS: You also trained as a singer at Berkley College of Music. When did
you decide you preferred writing music?
SA: After I wrote my first song, I
knew.
BiS: Your albums always feature great actors/singers from Broadway and
the West End. How does it feel to have your music sung by such talented people?
SA: One of the best feelings in the
world is hearing talented actors interpret my work. I have been very
fortunate.
BiS: Your songs are often sung both by men or women, were they
originally written that way or with that purpose?
SA: I write for me so when I’m
giving a song to a particular person to sing I just allow whomever reacts to
the original material. Doesn’t matter of the sex. We all emote the same way.
BiS: If you could choose ANY actor/singer in the world to sing one of
your songs, who would you like it to be?
SA: Been dying to work with Tina
Arena. One day it will happen.
BiS: You’re also releasing a new album this year. What can we expect
about it?
SA: I don’t know yet. I change the direction of the album
daily. You will be as surprised as I
am.
BiS: You created the music for a new musical, HOME, whose reading took
place last summer. What’s its status at the moment? We heard it was West
End–bound this 2014? What can you tell us about the musical?
SA: New musicals are difficult
because it takes a lot of work to get it up.
As of now, you know as much as I do about the show and you will know as
soon as anything moves forward.
BiS: You’re quite active on twitter, fb, tumblr… What do you like most
about social networks?
SA: I actually don’t love it. I think we gain a fake sense of ourselves on
social network sites. It’s extremely
easy to get removed from reality. That
being said I‘m my own business and in order to sell my product it is extremely
important to be seen and heard on these sites.
I try to be as honest as possible.
My humour gets lost a lot on twitter because I tend to be a very
sarcastic individual. I like Tumblr
because it gives me the opportunity to write down thoughts and edit those
thoughts even after the post has gone up.
BiS: With award season getting closer, and some big names opening in the
next months, which new broadway show are you more excited to see?
SA: I really want to see Rocky
because I love the work of Ahrens and Flaherty.
I also look forward to seeing The Bridges of Madison County. I still
haven’t seen Beautiful and really love the music of Carole King so that’s
another one for the future. Oh, and of
course Voilet. I love the score by
Jeanine Tesori and Brian Crawley. With
Sutton Foster, Joshua Henry and Colin Donnell in it, it’s gonna be a huge
hit.
BiS: I know I already tweeted you this but… Will you ever do a concert
in Spain? Pretty please?? =) =)
SA: Sadly, I don’t have the expenses
to fly myself out to cities and do concerts of my work. It takes a producer or a theatre leader to
want me in their city and that is why I haven’t had the great opportunity to
perform in Spain as of yet. I look forward
to the day I get an offer to perform there and you better come say hi after the
show.
